German Blue Rams – What You Need To Know
If you aren’t familiar with these little guys, they are considered a Dwarf South American Cichlid and the do great in community tanks but can have species aggression so be careful having multiples in a smaller aquarium. In the aquarium trade, you can also find variations of these with different colors like the Gold Ram, Electric Blue Ram, and the more recent Dark Night Ram. They prefer soft water conditions and high heat, especially if you are trying to breed them.

Why We Love Them
In our attempts to breed them, we discovered that our natural water conditions were unsuitable for breeding parameters. We had extremely hard water which they can survive in but is not recommended if you want to pursue breeding. We considered getting an RO system but have not pulled that trigger yet. To spot the differences between a male and female, search for the pink belly which will indicate a female. If a pink belly is not present, it can be hard to determine the sex of your German Blue Ram because not all females will display the prominent coloration on their belly at all times. You can find the German Blue Ram and some color variations at your local big chain pet stores but we recommend searching for them at your local fish store to make sure you are receiving a hardy fish that can survive your tank parameters.
